Knowing the Signs

Every year people die from misdiagnosed and “complications from” diabetes. Although type 1 and type 2 are very different conditions, onset signs are the same, and are often misinterpreted. Know the signs: Super Thirsty, Lots of Bathroom Breaks, Super Hungry, Dramatic Weight Loss, Tired and Lethargic, Flu-like Symptoms (nausea & vomiting), Blurry Vision, Irritable

I think I have these symptoms! What should I do?

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, don’t wait – seek medical attention immediately! If you can’t see your doctor, many local pharmacies have clinics that can do a finger-stick, blood glucose test – it takes one drop of blood and less than 5 seconds. Or do what Kat did, and buy a Blood Glucose Meter and test yourself! The ADA recommends that your glucose levels be 70-130 mg/dl before a meal and less than 180 after a meal. If your meter reads “HIGH” go to the Emergency Room!

I’m newly diagnosed – now what?

Take a deep breath…you will be okay. I wish I could give you a big hug! You will adjust to your “new normal”. Some helpful tips:

Get proper training: Upon diagnosis, ask your healthcare professional for training. Many Children’s Hospitals offer training or search for diabetes training in your local area. You will feel more confident if you know how to properly count carbs, put together healthy meals and calculate insulin.

Get connected: Often when first diagnosed you and your family and caregivers will feel like you are on an island. I promise you, we are not alone. 30 million people in the U.S. have diabetes (combined type 1 and type2) – that’s almost 10% of the population! Google your local JDRF for type 1 (jdrf.org) and ADA (for info on type 1 and type 2 at diabetes.org) and attend a local meeting. Make some new connections, and get some dia-buddies.
